The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has released its Technology and Innovation Report 2025, forecasting that the global artificial intelligence (AI) market will reach $4.8 trillion by 2033, an amount comparable to the size of Germany's economy. Notably, however, the benefits of this growth are heavily concentrated in a select few economies, with just 100 companies—primarily based in the United States and China—accounting for 40% of global corporate research and development (R&D) expenditures. The report urges developing countries to promptly formulate AI strategies, invest in digital infrastructure and capacity building, and strengthen AI governance in order to harness the potential of AI for sustainable development.
