Elon Musk's xAI company has encountered a trademark controversy regarding the naming of its chatbot, "Grok." The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has temporarily halted the company's trademark application, expressing concern that the name may lead to confusion with existing entities such as chip manufacturer Groq, software firm Grokstream, and the startup Bizly. Bizly's founder revealed that their team had been using the name and pursuing a trademark since 2021, but after Musk introduced a product with the same moniker, Bizly's funding took a significant hit, pushing them towards the brink of bankruptcy. Legal experts emphasize that the core aim of trademark protection is to prevent consumer confusion; however, since Bizly's application has yet to be officially launched and its commercial usage is limited, this could weaken their case. To date, xAI has remained silent on the matter. Musk has previously sparked numerous controversies related to naming issues.
