November 6 – The European Central Bank is weighing a targeted review of data center-related loans to assess potential risks stemming from shifts in artificial intelligence market sentiment and valuation fluctuations, according to people familiar with the matter. Senior ECB officials have raised the idea of such a review in internal discussions and in talks with supervised banks, the people told Bloomberg. As concerns mount over rising interest rates and opposition to data center construction, regulators worldwide are stepping up scrutiny of banks' AI-related risks. One person familiar with the matter said the review could take the form of on-site inspections, focusing on how banks assess future cash flows and collateral values, and how they set aside provisions for potential defaults. Another person emphasized that the scope of this investigation will not be as broad as the ECB's review of leveraged finance several years ago, which strained relations between regulators and banks. The ECB has not yet determined the specific review approach for data centers and broader AI risks.
