OpenAI has demonstrated new progress of GPT-6 Astra in the collaborative design of mechanical, circuit, and software components. With the help of this model, two team members completed the full design process of a test device in under a week, and a contract manufacturer produced a small batch of prototypes in less than a month—significantly compressing the cycle from design to implementation for physical products. Currently, the AI cannot yet fully account for production constraints, dimensional tolerances, and assembly details, and can only serve as an accelerator for physical product R&D. OpenAI is collaborating with Mazda to explore new car styling optimization solutions and is expanding cooperation with racing teams, attempting to convert 3D scan data of parts into editable CAD models and 2D manufacturing drawings to address the issue of missing original design files.
