Google has announced that starting in 2027, it will revise its AI feature management policy for K-12 education users. The relevant AI services and Google Search will be disabled by default, requiring school administrators to actively authorize activation. Because search and AI have become so deeply intertwined, schools cannot keep traditional Google Search while fully disabling AI. The change also affects Guided Learning, an AI-assisted learning feature that will first be piloted in select U.S. schools and gradually rolled out after feedback is gathered. Previously, many educational institutions and parents worried that AI tools might undermine students' independent thinking. Google has set the relevant tools to be off by default, but the coupling of search and AI features has also sparked fresh debate.
