OpenAI's challenge to Google in the search arena is beginning to bear fruit: search-type queries on ChatGPT have reached roughly 20% of Google's search query volume. Surveys indicate that searching for information is the most common AI use case among American adults, with 42% of respondents having used AI to look up information and 38% of employed respondents having used AI to handle work tasks, while uses such as entertainment, news consumption, and seeking medical advice remain relatively uncommon. ChatGPT is the most popular AI chatbot in the United States, with 44% of surveyed American adults having used it—far outpacing second-place Gemini. Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google parent company Alphabet, has said that competition between AI chatbots and Google Search is not a zero-sum game, citing YouTube's continued strong growth after the rise of TikTok as an example and noting that Google's search query volume is growing in tandem as well.
