OpenAI has hired former Uber executive Jill Hazelbaker as Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, filling a position that had been vacant for nearly a year. She will start in early December, reporting directly to co-founder and President Greg Brockman. Based on the East Coast, she will travel to the San Francisco headquarters as needed. In her role, she will work with leadership to deepen public understanding of artificial intelligence and bolster public trust in the company's mission. Hazelbaker is a veteran tech communications professional who spent 11 years at Uber and held senior leadership roles at Snap and Google. During the vacancy, OpenAI weathered multiple public controversies, drew criticism for insufficient operational transparency, and saw rising public concern about the potential harms of AI; related data center construction disputes also became a key issue in the U.S. midterm elections. OpenAI extended her an offer in the spring of this year, but she declined; the company ultimately secured her onboarding with favorable terms.
