Speaking at the main forum of the opening ceremony of the 2026 World Laureates Forum on October 31, Zeng Yuqun, Chairman and founder of CATL, stated that the company is advancing battery technology to power energy development. However, he noted that the energy density of existing batteries remains insufficient to support broader applications, and the industry must harness artificial intelligence alongside the collective strength of the global scientific community to accelerate fundamental innovation in electrochemistry. Zeng pointed out that battery systems span multiple time scales—from femtoseconds to decades—and multiple dimensions at the atomic level, making the underlying processes highly complex. To address this, CATL is leveraging large language models to empower scientific discovery. The company has amassed more than one trillion pieces of test data and has developed its own AI-native research system that bridges wet labs and dry labs. Nevertheless, Zeng believes that what has been achieved so far is still not enough, and that support from the electrochemistry scientific community is particularly needed.
