On October 30, Nikkei reported that the Japanese government has requested U.S. AI developers Anthropic and OpenAI to provide broader access to advanced models capable of identifying cybersecurity vulnerabilities, and to encourage critical infrastructure operators to adopt them. Japan plans to announce a package of cybersecurity measures as early as next week, including provisions on strengthening cooperation with U.S. AI developers. On Monday, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi instructed cabinet members to push forward the related work, cooperating with overseas government agencies to identify cyber attackers and address system vulnerabilities. Japan is currently striving to curb a wave of data breaches. On October 13, Japan's cybersecurity chief Shunji Furukawa met with Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark, and the two sides confirmed that Anthropic will cooperate with an AI safety research institution under the Japanese government to analyze methods of using AI to launch attacks.
