In July of this year, Anthropic acquired Mithril Medicine, a biopharmaceutical startup that had only one full-time employee. The company's founder used Claude to coordinate 11 external laboratories and, in less than 18 months, advanced the development of therapies for two rare genetic diseases. Among these, the therapy targeting LAMA2-related congenital muscular dystrophy has shown positive results in mouse studies. Its "one-person R&D pipeline" model was the primary reason behind Anthropic's acquisition. Following the acquisition, the two drug pipelines became Anthropic's first internally developed drug projects, and the founder, Cody, joined Anthropic to continue advancing rare disease research. Anthropic had previously staked its claim in the life sciences sector by launching AI products for the field, acquiring a biopharmaceutical AI company, building an automated experimentation system, and establishing its own wet lab—shifting from an AI tool provider to direct participation in drug R&D. However, the relevant pipelines still need to go through a lengthy clinical trial phase before they can be put into practical use.
