On October 30, the Bank of Japan kept interest rates unchanged as widely expected and stated for the first time that its inflation trend had reached 2%. After the committee voted 8-1 to pass the resolution, the yen rose about 0.24% against the dollar to 157.34 and held onto its gains, signaling that the currency is reclaiming its traditional safe-haven status. Over the past few years, wide interest rate differentials and Japan's massive overseas investment flows have often prevented the yen from playing its safe-haven role when markets come under pressure. Goldman Sachs strategists said the yen is becoming a more effective hedge against AI-driven market shocks, as changes in Japan's policy backdrop have reduced the risk of the currency falling sharply when global yields rise.
