Linux kernel maintainers have reached a consensus to abolish the 'Assisted-by' tag and eliminate the requirement for developers to disclose the use of AI-assisted programming tools. Going forward, developers will not need to indicate whether AI tools were used when submitting code. This decision, stemming from the October 8, 2026, Maintainer Summit in Prague, Czech Republic, aims to streamline processes and reduce the burden on developers. Linux creator Linus Torvalds believes that code quality depends on the developers themselves, not the tools. He emphasized that the focus should be on whether developers understand the code, rather than whether AI was used. Under the new rule, the responsibility for the code still rests with the submitter.
