OpenAI is currently engaged in talks with an undisclosed startup that focuses on AI video technology for the film production industry. The plan is to transfer the Sora video generation model, which was previously discontinued, to this startup, facilitating its re-entry into the market as a professional tool for film and television. This startup was established a few months ago by a trio of notable figures: Hollywood producer Jeffrey Katzenberg, former lead researcher of Sora Bill Peebles, and former Dropbox CFO Sujay Jaswa. Their goal is to take over and reimagine the Sora platform, with the aim of developing and marketing software or services specifically designed for film and TV producers.
At present, the precise terms of the collaboration between OpenAI and the startup have yet to be finalized. It is also uncertain whether the startup will be granted access to Sora's model weights—a crucial component for understanding and utilizing the model's full capabilities. Earlier in the year, OpenAI made the decision to halt the development of the Sora model and its TikTok-like video application. This move was part of a broader strategy to streamline operations by reducing non-core projects that consumed significant computational resources. The company redirected its resources towards enterprise AI, programming tools, and other business ventures. As a result, Sora's consumer application and web platform were shut down. Additionally, OpenAI terminated a planned collaboration with Disney, which was estimated to be worth around $1 billion.
