On October 12, UK AI Minister Kanishka Narayan revealed on Monday that the UK is forging a close partnership with the US government. This collaboration aims to empower the UK’s AI Safety Institute to rigorously test the most cutting-edge AI models prior to their public release. During his address in London, he underscored, “My ambition is to position the UK as one of the most formidable nations globally in terms of resilience against AI-driven threats.”
Previous reports have highlighted that the Trump administration mandated OpenAI and Anthropic to withhold AI models from the UK unless they received explicit security clearance from the US. This move was part of a broader strategy by the Trump administration to exert tighter control over the international dissemination of AI models originating from Silicon Valley. Earlier in the year, the US government prohibited Anthropic from sharing its latest AI models with foreign nationals. Additionally, there were claims that Anthropic refrained from providing the UK’s AI Safety Institute with access to the newest iteration of its Mythos model, without offering any justification.
