On October 9, news broke that OpenAI had uploaded more than 700 preprints to GitHub on October 6, touting advancements in 372 mathematical problems spanning geometry, computer science, and algebra, thereby making strides in pushing the boundaries of advanced mathematics within a mere 24-hour span. Nevertheless, within a day, the company retracted three of these manuscripts after identifying a symbol error. This move triggered discontent and apprehension among mathematicians. On October 7, the Human Mathematics Association also released a statement, condemning OpenAI's move. They argued that mathematicians had not solicited this research and that the mass release of papers was not an academic endeavor but rather a show of force. The association called on mathematicians to cease collaborating with OpenAI and to refocus on a scientific approach centered on human comprehension. This stance was echoed by Fields Medal recipient Terence Tao, who shared the statement.
