OpenAI has unveiled its inaugural report on teenager usage patterns. The findings reveal that, on average, teenage users engage with ChatGPT for less than 15 minutes daily, with a mere 2% of users exceeding three hours of continuous use. The break reminder system implemented by OpenAI has demonstrated remarkable efficacy, prompting nearly half of the teenage users who received these reminders to pause or terminate their sessions within five minutes. Teenagers utilizing the exclusive version of ChatGPT are more prone to send messages related to education, showing a high utilization rate of its learning functionalities. Looking ahead, OpenAI intends to roll out innovative features such as university application planning tools and learning cards. The teenage mode of ChatGPT, introduced in August of this year, can be automatically activated based on age verification or system assessment, and incorporates parental controls to limit discussions on sensitive subjects. However, a third-party non-profit organization's testing has cast doubt on the effectiveness of the parental safety reminder system. The organization reported that when teenage accounts engage in sensitive conversations about suicide or self-harm, the platform frequently delays or even fails to notify parents altogether. Additionally, it does not consistently recommend users to reach out to crisis intervention services. In response, OpenAI clarified that the majority of tests were conducted prior to the activation of parental control features, and thus may not accurately represent the current state of affairs. The organization countered by asserting that some test accounts had ample interaction time, yet none of them received timely reminders. Notifications were only sent to accounts with several weeks' worth of sensitive conversation records.
