On October 7, the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada highlighted that the utilization of artificial intelligence among Canadian businesses and institutions has soared by more than eight times over the past three years. However, the development of corresponding governance systems has significantly lagged behind. A survey conducted by the association, encompassing 5,000 chartered professional accountants, disclosed that 43% of the respondents' organizations have embraced AI this year, a substantial increase from the mere 5% recorded in 2023. Concurrently, nearly three-quarters of the respondents reported using AI tools at work at least once a week. The survey also revealed that an increasing number of respondents perceive AI as having delivered tangible benefits. Nevertheless, businesses appear to be ill-prepared in terms of governance. Although 67% of respondents indicated that they are able to use AI tools sanctioned by their organizations, only 45% affirmed that their organizations have instituted formal policies governing AI usage. Furthermore, a mere 34% of respondents stated that their organizations have provided AI training for employees or formulated formal AI strategies.
