OpenAI has announced that it will introduce visual display ads next to images generated by users in ChatGPT. These ads, presented in image form, will be clearly labeled and separated from the generated images, without modifying the generated content or affecting ChatGPT's responses. The ads will be displayed below the image generation progress indicator, with one ad slot allocated per image request. Initially, the ads will be available to a select group of users in the United States, with a gradual expansion to a global audience. The reach may vary for users with different subscription plans. To ensure safety, OpenAI has implemented measures such as screening for sensitive conversational contexts, preventing partners from accessing users' private conversations. Additionally, OpenAI has introduced various effectiveness measurement tools to help advertisers evaluate the performance of their ads. This move is part of AI platforms' efforts to secure funding for the high-cost computational power required for image generation while maintaining a free access model. Due to the nature of image generation computational power, ad inventory will be more limited compared to traditional search ads. In compliance with European regulations, OpenAI will publicly release a public repository of all ads in January of the following year.
