On October 5, former Anthropic researcher Jacob Cauckson will testify at a New York City Council hearing on Monday, alongside representatives from major global AI companies. Cauckson has warned that artificial intelligence could develop to a point beyond human control. The hearing, requested by New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin, aims to establish safety safeguards around AI technology. Cauckson, who left Anthropic last month, harshly criticized the race among his former employer Anthropic, OpenAI, and other companies to develop powerful AI, calling it 'a bet with our lives.' In addition to Cauckson, industry critics such as former Google DeepMind researcher Alex Turner and AI Futures Project Executive Director Daniel Kokotajlo will also attend. Meanwhile, four major AI companies—Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, and Meta Platforms—will send officials responsible for policy and safety affairs to participate in the hearing.
