On October 1, international media outlets reported that JERA, Japan's foremost power generator, is set to collaborate with Dell and RHAELM, a UK-based AI infrastructure developer, to jointly foster the development of AI infrastructure in Japan. The trio has inked a memorandum of understanding, outlining their plans to create a standardized framework for AI infrastructure development throughout Japan. This framework will initially be rolled out in Chiba. In this endeavor, JERA will provide land adjacent to its power plant. Meanwhile, RHAELM will take charge of the development, construction, operation, and financing of a 400-megawatt hyperscale AI data center. JERA officials disclosed that the new data center is slated to be commissioned in stages, commencing in 2028, and is projected to achieve its full capacity of 400 megawatts by 2029. Under a 15-to-25-year contract, JERA will supply 400 megawatts of electricity, and Dell will furnish standardized rack-level AI infrastructure.
