Google is ramping up efforts to transition its voice assistant on Android devices, with Gemini stepping in to replace Google Assistant as the default option. Users in various regions across the U.S. and Europe have observed that the original Google Assistant has ceased to function, as their devices and accounts have now been switched over to Gemini. Google had previously delayed this migration plan on several occasions before finally commencing the deactivation of Google Assistant on mobile devices in early September of this year. At present, the Gemini app no longer offers the option to revert to Google Assistant, effectively preventing users from re-enabling Google Assistant on devices including phones, tablets, Wear OS watches, headphones, and Android Auto in-car systems. Now, a long-press of the power button on an Android device or a swipe inward from the screen corner will directly summon Gemini. This change, for the time being, does not impact smart speakers and display devices like Google Nest and Google Home, which can still utilize Google Assistant, with no concrete plans announced for their future migration to Gemini.
