As reported by Reuters, on Wednesday, the Federal Register website, which is managed by the U.S. National Archives, introduced a search tool powered by Alibaba's QianWen AI model. This tool enabled users to conduct searches for proposed federal regulations. Nevertheless, the tool was promptly removed from the website on the very same day.

QianWen is an open-weight AI model, meaning that its core components are openly accessible to the public. Generally, such models incur lower costs compared to closed-source alternatives. AI specialists are of the opinion that integrating this Chinese AI tool into the Federal Register website is unlikely to present a national security threat.

Previously, several U.S. departments had jointly issued a warning, alleging that Chinese AI companies were engaging in the "plagiarism" of U.S. large-scale AI models through the technique of model distillation. In response to these allegations, China has stated that they are devoid of factual and legal grounding.
