Researchers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in the United States have developed a new system that utilizes cameras and AI technology to inspect components layer by layer during the 3D printing process, promptly detecting subtle defects such as filament breaks and dimensional abnormalities. This technology is expected to identify issues before printing is completed, reducing the time and costs associated with subsequent inspections, and is applicable to other advanced manufacturing technologies, traditional subtractive manufacturing processes, and experimental systems. Related research has been published in the journal npj Advanced Manufacturing.
