An independent researcher assigned Claude Fable 5.1 the challenge of deciphering cryptographic puzzles left behind by Sir Thomas Urquhart, a distinguished 17th-century British scholar. Remarkably, within a mere 44 minutes and utilizing 176,000 Tokens, Claude successfully cracked, without any human assistance, a two-line cipher that had eluded solution for 370 years. Following this achievement, it proceeded to decipher a more complex, eight-line cipher from another of Urquhart's works. The AI uncovered that the key to the cipher was cleverly concealed within the corresponding books themselves, decrypting the messages by aligning the cipher numbers with the initial letters of words in specific chapters or the page numbers within the books. This showcases the ability of AI to rapidly execute tasks involving search and testing, and it is increasingly assuming roles in knowledge exploration that are challenging for humans due to our inherent energy limitations.
