Jiang Kai has departed from Coatue and is now a formal member of ByteDance, where he will lead the Hong Kong financial investment team and report directly to ByteDance’s Chief Financial Officer, Julie Gao. Prior to this role, Jiang Kai served as the head of Coatue China and has been instrumental in numerous high-profile project investments, having early ties with ByteDance. His inclusion is poised to assist ByteDance in developing a more structured investment approach for emerging technology startups. Julie Gao, with her vast expertise in capital markets, has played a pivotal role in several significant acquisitions and fundraising efforts for ByteDance. Earlier, ByteDance dissolved its strategic investment department, retaining only the financial investment operations and pivoting towards an investment philosophy centered on returns and core sectors. Presently, ByteDance is redirecting its strategic emphasis towards AI, focusing on in-house development of multimodal models and other AI products, with Zhang Yiming also stepping back into active AI R&D. ByteDance’s financial investments are similarly concentrated on the AI sector; however, in contrast to Tencent and Alibaba, its investment approach is more cautious. The arrival of Jiang Kai is anticipated to steer ByteDance towards a more professional, globally-oriented, and AI-focused systematic capital deployment.
