The US Senate is currently in the process of deliberating a regulatory bill concerning AI. This proposed legislation mandates that AI companies provide proof of having implemented reasonable safety measures to avert any potential harm caused by their technologies. The bill envisions empowering the US Secretary of Commerce to compel AI developers to adhere to a 'duty of care' and to dispatch auditors to evaluate their products. Additionally, it considers the involvement of federal courts in resolving disputes related to government attempts to prevent the launch of unsafe AI models. The clauses concerning federal courts would also aim to restrict states from enforcing their individual regulations concerning specific risks associated with AI models. Earlier, a researcher from Anthropic stepped down due to apprehensions that AI might pose lethal threats by the late 2020s, amplifying external concerns regarding the possible perils of AI. Leaders from various AI behemoths have advocated for a deceleration in technological advancement, leading to a downturn in global AI concept stocks on the 14th (local time). At present, the bill remains under consideration, and even if approved by Congress, it is improbable to be enacted into law.
