On September 13 local time, Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, gave an exclusive interview to CBS. On the same day, his blog post titled 'We Must Tap the Brakes on Frontier AI' received support from Elon Musk and Sam Altman. During the interview, Amodei pointed out that AI technology holds immense potential but also harbors risks. On the benefits side, AI has the potential to help humanity overcome diseases; however, on the risk side, some are attempting to use AI to develop biological weapons. He opposes a one-size-fits-all approach of shutting down AI models, arguing that safety safeguards, understanding, and control capabilities should keep pace with technological development. To this end, he proposed a three-step plan: introducing third-party external evaluation bodies, promoting industry collaboration to establish safety norms, and calling for government involvement. In terms of legislation, he supports reasonable regulation but opposes an outright ban on AI technology. He endorses the concept of an AI kill switch but believes multiple safeguards are necessary. Additionally, he called for negotiations similar to arms control with other countries, establishing verification mechanisms, promoting joint governance of AI technology, and encouraging public participation. Meanwhile, he stated that Anthropic has been ridiculed for its stringent biosecurity measures, but the company prefers this approach rather than seeing its models misused.
