Medical device behemoths across the globe have harnessed AI technology to fuel revenue expansion, with AI emerging as a pivotal force propelling the industry forward. Intuitive Surgical, for instance, has seamlessly integrated AI functionalities into its MI Plus subscription service, resulting in a remarkable zero churn rate for renewals. Notably, the growth in service revenue has outstripped that of hardware sales. Leveraging a surgical dataset spanning two decades, its AI-driven case insights and other features not only elevate surgical quality but also facilitate remote collaboration and underpin the development of next-generation robotic systems.
Medtronic, too, has witnessed robust double-digit growth across several AI-powered product lines. This surge is driving traditional business sectors such as cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, cranial, and spinal applications, while simultaneously expediting its shift towards AI-centric operations. The company is strategically divesting low-growth ventures and constructing an open AI ecosystem platform to foster innovation and collaboration.
Domestically, leading medical device manufacturers United Imaging and Mindray are actively investing in AI strategies and incorporating AI technologies into their product portfolios. However, they have yet to disclose specific revenue figures related to AI. At present, AI primarily functions as a marketing tool to bolster hardware competitiveness within the Chinese market. Given the disparities in development stages, payment ecosystems, and competitive landscapes between China and international markets, the commercialization of AI in China is still in its nascent stages. Nevertheless, it is anticipated that a growing number of medical technology firms will successfully monetize their AI products in the future, thereby triggering a revaluation of the entire industry.
