On September 11, buoyed by the unprecedented surge in artificial intelligence (AI) spending, the US convertible bond market reached an all-time annual high in terms of total issuance. Data indicates that US-listed companies have successfully raised $131 billion through the issuance of convertible bonds, which can be converted into stocks. Notably, the $25 billion raised in August alone was enough to propel the annual total past the previous record set two years prior. This remarkable growth has drawn participation from a diverse range of entities, including emerging AI cloud computing firms like Nebius Group NV, as well as investment-grade corporations. Alphabet, for instance, issued the largest convertible bond of the year as part of its expansive $85 billion financing strategy.
Craig McCracken from Wells Fargo commented that the current level of issuance significantly surpasses historical norms, driven primarily by the escalating financing demands for AI and its associated infrastructure. He also observed that investment-grade issuers are increasingly active in this market. Spencer Rogers, a strategist at Goldman Sachs, further highlighted that approximately 44% of this year's convertible bond issuance can be attributed to companies operating within the AI sector.
