The latest PISA data released by the OECD shows that, on the whole, students who use AI to assist their learning tend to perform worse than those who do not use AI. Specifically, in science tests, students who never or almost never use AI to draft writing assignments scored an average of 509 points, while those who use AI every day or almost every day scored an average of only 481 points. Even after adjusting for socioeconomic backgrounds, there remains a 28-point gap between the two groups. However, when AI use is combined with training to evaluate AI-generated results, the situation changes. For example, students who frequently assess the accuracy of AI-generated information in class score 13 points higher in science.
