Tencent has recently witnessed personnel shifts within its AI division. Tian Yonglong has taken on the role of the head of Hunyuan Multimodal in Tencent's CEO/President's Office, reporting directly to Yao Shunyu, who leads Tencent's large-scale model initiatives. Tian Yonglong boasts an impressive academic background, holding a bachelor's degree from Tsinghua University, a master's degree from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and a Ph.D. from MIT. His professional journey includes stints at Google Research, Google DeepMind, and OpenAI. He joined Tencent in July 2026 to spearhead the Hunyuan Multimodal projects. On July 24th of this year, Tencent announced a restructuring, merging its Hunyuan Multimodal Model Department and Large Language Model Department into a unified Basic Model Department, which will be overseen by Yao Shunyu. Amidst this organizational reshuffle, Tian Yonglong was entrusted with leading the Visual Language Model (VLM) direction. Sina Technology has sought confirmation from Tencent regarding these developments but has not yet received a response.
