Recently, Dai Qing from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Hu Hai from the National Center for Nanoscience and Technology, and Zhu Maguang from Nanjing University collaborated to address the demand for high-speed, low-power optical interconnects driven by the growth of artificial intelligence computing power, achieving breakthroughs in the dynamic modulation of polaritons and non-Hermitian nanophotonics. The research team proposed a new concept of 'loss engineering,' which involves actively designing the intensity and direction of dissipation through electrical means, transforming loss into a functional degree of freedom for modulating nanoscale optical fields, rather than simply avoiding it.
