China's AI model sector is undergoing swift technological evolution and witnessing an unprecedented surge in utilization, triggering a fresh wave of expansion in cloud computing infrastructure investment. Throughout August, cloud service behemoths including Tencent and Alibaba, as well as independent AI research entities like DeepSeek and Zhipu, unveiled upgraded iterations of their models. Certain providers adjusted their token pricing strategies, while Tencent and Alibaba reported notable upticks in both capital expenditures and cloud revenue during the second quarter. This has prompted market analysts to revise upwards their projections for these companies' capital expenditures over the forthcoming 12-month period.

The performance gap between domestic AI models and their global counterparts is steadily diminishing. Notably, Moonshot AI's Kimi K3 and Zhipu's GLM-5.3 have achieved scores equivalent to 95% of the global top-tier benchmark, with GLM-5.3's agent functionalities sharing the top spot alongside Claude Opus 5. In terms of model utilization, domestic offerings are taking the lead, with DeepSeek securing the highest token usage share. Additionally, a stark pricing differential exists between Chinese and U.S. models, with Chinese variants showcasing a distinct cost-efficiency edge.

Bank of America Merrill Lynch forecasts that the capital expenditures of China's four leading cloud platforms will escalate by 98% year-on-year in 2026 and 44% in 2027, surpassing the RMB 1 trillion milestone by 2027. The Chinese cloud market is anticipated to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of roughly 38% from 2025 to 2030, with AI-centric cloud services serving as the primary growth catalyst. AI MaaS (Model as a Service) is projected to grow at an even more rapid CAGR of 81%. Cloud service titans such as Alibaba and Tencent, along with independent AI labs like Zhipu, are well-positioned to capitalize on these growth prospects.

On the consumer front, ByteDance's Doubao leads in terms of user base size, while DeepSeek's user engagement metrics continue to climb. Looking ahead, multiple vendors are expected to roll out new model versions, with Zhipu and MiniMax facing share unlockings in the near future.
