On August 31, the European Commission announced on Monday that ChatGPT, owned by OpenAI, must comply with stricter EU regulations, including the removal of illegal content, or face fines. Currently, Brussels is exploring how to apply the existing digital regulatory framework to rapidly developing AI services. Under the EU's Digital Services Act (DSA), the chatbot ChatGPT, social media forum Reddit, and gaming platform Roblox have been classified as 'Very Large Online Platforms' and are subject to additional obligations, such as removing illegal content and protecting minors' privacy and safety. Failure to comply may result in fines of up to 6% of their global revenue. This decision marks the expansion of DSA oversight to the field of generative AI, following an investigation into the AI chatbot Grok from social platform X under the same law.
