Sources in the United States report that subsidiaries of Sony Music and Warner Music have recently initiated legal proceedings against the U.S.-based artificial intelligence company, Anthropic, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. They accuse Anthropic of engaging in large-scale copyright infringement of musical works, utilizing these infringing materials to train its AI models. The plaintiffs allege that Anthropic illegally acquired a substantial volume of copyrighted music through unauthorized downloads, web scraping, and similar methods to fuel the development and operation of its AI systems. They contend that Anthropic's conduct represents "one of the most extensive, egregious, and prolonged intellectual property thefts in history," and are demanding compensation of up to $150,000 for each work infringed upon. Anthropic, for its part, has refuted these accusations.
