On August 28, sources reported that Anthropic had discussed acquiring the AI chip startup MatX for around $7 billion, aiming to accelerate the development of custom hardware for its AI business. According to informed sources, the merger and acquisition negotiations have shifted to cooperation discussions. Previously, MatX was seeking a new round of funding with a valuation of approximately $4 billion. The discussions with MatX suggest that Anthropic may be interested in developing chips for model training, while other chip startups and competitor OpenAI are focusing on developing processors better suited for generating chatbot responses, known as 'inference' chips. However, Anthropic may also choose to develop inference chips.
