On August 27th, according to The New York Times, Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently criticized competitor Anthropic. Although Zuckerberg did not directly mention the name of this AI startup or its CEO Dario Amodei, he pointed out that some leading AI labs are attempting to concentrate power while depicting the future as a 'doom-laden' scenario. In a 6,500-word article published this month, Zuckerberg stated, 'If these labs dominate, the balance of power will shift more toward large institutions rather than individuals.' However, while publicly criticizing Anthropic, Meta has been vigorously supporting the development of this competitor behind the scenes. According to five sources familiar with the matter, Meta has become a significant user of Anthropic's AI products, even ranking among its largest clients. Two of these sources stated that at some point this year, Meta expected its annual spending on Anthropic's AI models could reach as much as $10 billion. If this figure materializes, it would account for a substantial portion of Anthropic's annual revenue. Anthropic projected in July this year that its annual revenue would exceed $65 billion.
