Google's DeepMind unit has reportedly made the strategic decision to shift away from pioneering cutting-edge model research and development. Instead, the team is now focusing on developing more cost-efficient Flash-level models. Presently, the core team does not rely on Gemini as their main model for daily operations; only non-core teams are mandated to use it. On August 5th, DeepMind unveiled a significant restructuring plan. Under this plan, CEO Hassabis will relinquish his day-to-day management responsibilities to assume the roles of Chairman and Chief Scientist at Alphabet. In his new capacity, he will concentrate on AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) strategy and scientific applications. This restructuring move is anticipated to result in substantial layoffs, potentially impacting up to one-third or more of the current workforce, as the company aims to eliminate redundant positions. The restructuring is closely tied to the delay of the Gemini model, with internal disputes within the development team and the scarcity of AI training computing resources at Google being cited as contributing factors.
