On Thursday (the 16th), local time, Meta unveiled a series of initiatives aimed at bolstering the safety of teenagers engaging with Meta AI. In instances where teenagers converse with Meta AI about topics related to suicide or self-harm, the system will promptly notify their parents. The relevant conversations will initially undergo a manual review process to ascertain whether an alert should be issued. Even if the true intent remains ambiguous, parents will still be informed. Should the conversation suggest that the user might be on the verge of committing suicide, Meta will take immediate action by contacting emergency services. At present, parents in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada who utilize Instagram's parental supervision tools can receive these alerts. This measure is set to be implemented on a global scale by the end of the year. Furthermore, parents will have the capability to review the topics discussed by teenagers with Meta AI over the past week. They can also activate the 'Restricted Content' settings, which have been extended to Meta AI, imposing more stringent content limitations for teenagers on both Instagram and Meta AI. As a result, Meta AI will decline to respond to a wider range of inquiries. Concurrently, irrespective of whether the user is an adult or a teenager, if the conversation indicates that someone may be contemplating suicide, Meta will promptly contact emergency services.
