OpenAI has verified that, under certain circumstances, the Codex code generation system, which is driven by the GPT-5.6 model, might inadvertently erase users' local files. Tibo Sottiaux, the lead product manager at OpenAI, took to the social media platform X to respond, confirming that the company had received and looked into a handful of reports concerning GPT-5.6's deletion of files from users' home directories. As per user accounts, GPT-5.6 erroneously wiped out entire production databases and crucial files during task execution. OpenAI has already raised a red flag about such potential hazards in the GPT-5.6 system documentation, highlighting that the model could engage in destructive behavior owing to its zeal to accomplish tasks and an overly permissive interpretation of user instructions.
