On July 16, in line with the Digital Markets Act (DMA), the European Commission issued two pivotal technical specification mandates for Google, with the overarching goal of fostering heightened competition within the artificial intelligence (AI) and search markets. Initially, Google is compelled to unbolt essential functionalities of the Android system. This move permits third-party AI assistants to tap into features like voice wake-up and cross-application task execution, ensuring they receive parity with Google's proprietary Gemini. Furthermore, Google is tasked with providing access to anonymized search data for qualified search engines and AI chatbots equipped with search capabilities. Additionally, it must institute a transparent framework for data acquisition and pricing.
