On July 8, Axios broke the news that the U.S. Department of Commerce has granted official approval for OpenAI to widely deploy its latest advanced language model, GPT-5.6. This move effectively removes the export and application restrictions that were initially put in place by the Trump administration. OpenAI is now poised to roll out the model to the general public this week, following the completion of its final preparatory steps. Internally referred to as 'iris-alpha,' this model boasts an impressive context length of up to 1.5 million tokens. It comes in three distinct versions: Sol, Terra, and Luna, each tailored for flagship, balanced, and lightweight applications, respectively. Earlier, concerns over national security had prompted the U.S. government to enforce a phased release strategy, limiting access to only pre-approved partners. The pre-approval testing phase was overseen by the AI Standards and Innovation Center, operating under the aegis of the U.S. Department of Commerce. The introduction of GPT-5.6 is set to redefine the capabilities of AI applications and is expected to ramp up the competitive landscape, pitting it against other leading models such as Google's Gemini and Anthropic's Claude.
