On July 8, 2026, Beijing Time, Joshua Achiam, the Chief Futurist at OpenAI, took to social media to announce that he would be wrapping up his nearly nine-year tenure at the company by the end of July. He explained that this decision was the result of extensive contemplation. He emphasized that the vast potential of AI development has now garnered widespread acknowledgment, and he believes he can further pursue related endeavors beyond the confines of a leading-edge laboratory. Achiam first joined OpenAI as an intern in 2017. In September 2024, he ascended to the position of head of the Mission Alignment team. Following the team's disbandment in February 2026, he assumed the role of Chief Futurist, dedicating his efforts to researching the macro-social, policy, and long-term implications of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). His departure is regarded as the latest development in the ongoing 'exodus' of OpenAI's safety-centric faction. This follows the earlier departures of key technical safety personnel, such as former Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever and former CTO Mira Murati. Industry analysts posit that OpenAI is stepping up its transition towards commercialization in anticipation of an Initial Public Offering (IPO). Consequently, its initial 'nonprofit and technology safety first' philosophy is gradually giving way to the logic of commercial competition.
