Sources with insider knowledge reveal that the Trump administration has urged OpenAI to implement a phased release strategy for its upcoming high-performance artificial intelligence model. This move comes less than two weeks after OpenAI's rival, Anthropic PBC, temporarily restricted access to its state-of-the-art model amidst regulatory scrutiny. The insider, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the information, disclosed that during an internal meeting on Wednesday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman informed staff that the U.S. government had requested a controlled initial rollout of GPT-5.6. Specifically, the model would first be made available to a select group of trusted partners before a broader public release. Altman also highlighted during the meeting that U.S. authorities are growing increasingly wary of the potential implications and capabilities associated with the most sophisticated AI models currently in development.
