Recently, a controversy has emerged surrounding Anna Paulina Luna, a Republican representative from Florida. Luna's team has come under scrutiny for utilizing an AI tool, Claude developed by Anthropic, to generate summaries of amendments to a defense bill. Online screenshots reveal that unedited content produced by this AI tool has found its way into the amendment summaries, hinting at the possibility that Luna's team may have directly incorporated AI-generated text during the editing process.
In response to the ensuing questions and doubts, Luna initially acknowledged that her staff had employed AI to refine the draft text. However, she later retracted this statement, asserting that AI was solely utilized for spelling and grammar checks within the summaries and played no role in drafting the main text of the bill. Luna stressed that the Office of the Legislative Counsel of the House of Representatives strictly forbids the use of AI in bill drafting, and all bill texts are, in fact, sourced from this office.
