On June 24 (Wednesday), OpenAI and Broadcom made a joint announcement regarding the launch of their inaugural custom AI chip, internally codenamed 'Jalapeño'. This strategic initiative signifies OpenAI's formal entry into the realm of AI chip development. The chip will be crafted by Broadcom and will be specifically tailored for OpenAI's inference tasks, marking a pivotal advancement in OpenAI's ambition to construct a comprehensive technology ecosystem. OpenAI President Greg Brockman emphasized that by customizing its technological infrastructure, OpenAI can provide intelligent services with enhanced efficiency and foster the broader integration of cutting-edge AI technologies.

Dubbed the Intelligence Processor, this chip represents the first AI accelerator within the collaborative platform being developed by both entities. It is designed to amplify the speed and dependability of AI operations, thereby broadening its scope of application. On Wednesday, OpenAI received a tangible prototype of the chip. The two companies intend to commence the initial deployment of the Jalapeño chip by the close of 2026, with plans to progressively ramp up production in the subsequent years.
