OpenAI has unveiled its Robotics Division, marking a significant expansion from software-based AI to the realm of embodied AI. This move aims to bridge the gap between the digital and physical worlds through the utilization of large-scale models. Under the leadership of Sam Altman, OpenAI is actively recruiting engineers to spearhead this initiative. The team's immediate objective is to develop robots that can assist skilled workers in constructing infrastructure, while the long-term vision is to empower everyone with a versatile personal robot.

The new team is helmed by Aditya Ramesh, who previously oversaw the development of the DALL-E series and Sora models. His focus now lies in enabling AI to comprehend the principles governing the physical world and attain interaction capabilities on par with Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). In the past, OpenAI had ceased collaborations with certain robotics startups due to divergent technological philosophies. Now, it has opted to independently cultivate integrated hardware and software capabilities, positioning itself as a formidable contender against industry giants like Tesla in the embodied AI sector.
