Microsoft has offered a 'voluntary retirement' package to 8,750 long-serving employees in the United States, with a maximum payout of nearly 10 months' salary. According to internal documents seen by Business Insider, eligible employees can receive up to 39 weeks of base salary, along with up to 5 years of company-sponsored healthcare coverage and the vesting of stock options 6 to 12 months after departure. This marks the first time in Microsoft's 51-year history that such a program has been introduced. In the same year that Microsoft invested $190 billion in the AI sector, it chose to spend $900 million to retire a group of senior long-serving employees.
