OpenAI CEO Sam Altman planned to spin off the robotics and consumer hardware units at the end of last year to drive business growth and avoid hindering core operations. However, the plan was rejected due to the inability to achieve complete financial separation. This reflects the tough trade-offs OpenAI faces as it moves toward an IPO, with the company under pressure to scale back its 'side projects.' Currently, OpenAI is refocusing its business efforts to develop a new super app and has discontinued the video generation tool Sora. In the future, OpenAI may revisit the plan to spin off business lines, potentially adopting a structure similar to Google's Alphabet. At present, the robotics and consumer hardware units operate independently and report directly to Altman. The consumer hardware unit was established in May last year, with related hardware devices not expected to be available to consumers before the end of February 2027. In terms of robotics, OpenAI has been making strategic layout (laying out) for years, and Altman has stated that the company is exploring opportunities to expand and strengthen its presence in this field.
