On May 5, reports emerged that Brussels played host to the fourth session of the EU-Japan Digital Partnership Council on the same day. The European Commission has declared its intention to intensify regulatory, scientific research, and industrial cooperation with Japan across several domains, including data, artificial intelligence (AI), quantum technology, digital infrastructure, and online platforms. The collaborative ambitions of both entities span several pivotal sectors, notably data governance, AI, and quantum technology.

Regarding data governance, the EU is set to co-establish a 'Data Strategy Working Group' alongside Japan. This initiative aims to enhance data interchange and foster collaborative research, development, and innovation efforts. Moreover, the EU extends a warm invitation to Japan to partake in the 'Horizon Europe' scientific program, confident that this will expedite scientific research cooperation between the two in digital domains, particularly AI.

Additionally, both parties are poised to embark on joint research ventures in quantum technology. These projects are designed to advance the evolution of hybrid computing environments and delve into the potential applications of quantum technology in areas such as materials science, carbon dioxide reduction, communication networks, fluid mechanics, and satellite image analysis.
